Alkalinity
The Alkalinity level is one of three indicators that will help determine water balance (or imbalance). The Alkalinity level affects the pH level, which is likely the most important indicator of water balance (or imbalance).
While Alkalinity is directly related to pH, the two water balancers are not the same.
If shocking the pool (primarily when to shock the pool) is the most confusing topic for pool owners, then water balance - primarily the relationship of pH and Alkalinity, but really, water balance in general - is almost equally confusing.
You must understand the Alkalinity of the water to understand water balance.
