Ionizers
There are many pool sanitizer options. While traditional chlorine, salt (which is converted into chlorine), and mineral-chlorination are the most popular pool sanitizers, ion-chlorination is also a good sanitizer of pool water, primarily for those of you that want to reduce the amount of chlorine in the pool.
Sanitizing your pool with ion-chlorination is not required. It is an option...a sanitizer option.
But if you do opt to sanitize your water with ion-chlorination, then an ionizer (also called an ion generator) is required equipment.
Initially, ionizers were sold as an actual stand-alone sanitizer that was supposed to be an alternative to chlorine. However, it was quickly concluded that ionizers worked best when chlorine was still present in trace amounts to work with the ions. Therefore, ionizers quickly went from an alternative to chlorine to a co-sanitizer to be used with chlorine, albeit in trace amounts, to collectively sanitize pool water.
