Hardness
The Hardness level (also called the Calcium Hardness level) is one of three indicators that will help determine water balance (or imbalance). While pH and Alkalinity get the majority of the attention when water balance and the various water balancers are being discussed - and deservedly so - the Hardness level cannot be ignored.
Since the Hardness level does not have to be tested regularly (like the pH and Alkalinity levels do), there is less confusion about Hardness. But, some confusion still exists...primarily the difference between water that has a high Hardness level and water that is considered to be hard water...this alone can be somewhat confusing to pool owners.
While you must certainly understand the Alkalinity and pH levels of the water to understand water balance, the Hardness level cannot be forgotten.
You must also understand the Hardness of the water to understand water balance.
