The use of certain minerals as a sanitizer for pool water is often referred to as an alternative to chlorine, but it really should be referred to as a co-sanitizer with chlorine, because some chlorine - albeit in trace amounts - is required to assist the minerals in sanitizing the pool water.

This is known as mineral-chlorination.

There are many pool sanitizer options. While traditional chlorine and salt (which is converted into chlorine) remain the most popular pool sanitizers, mineral-chlorination is also a viable and proven sanitizer of pool water, primarily for those of you that want to reduce the amount of chlorine in the pool.
